A Great Start to the 2026 Walking Series
Our first Fort DuPont Flora Walk of 2026 was a wonderful success. Held in beautiful spring weather, the walk welcomed 10 participants to Fort DuPont in Delaware City. It was the first of three Native Flora Walks scheduled for 2026.
This first walk focused on spring and the seasonal changes that make this time of year so special. Across Delaware City, spring brings fresh color, new growth, and a renewed sense of energy to the landscape. At Fort DuPont, that means budding trees, early blooms, and native plants beginning to return across fields, edges, and wooded areas.
Celebrating Spring at Fort DuPont
Spring is one of the best times to explore the natural beauty of Fort DuPont. The landscape begins to wake up after winter. Green shoots appear along the trails. Trees begin to leaf out. Native plants and wildflowers add new texture and color to the campus.
In Delaware City, spring also brings comfortable temperatures and clear mornings that make outdoor walks especially enjoyable. As a result, this event gave participants a chance to slow down, observe, and enjoy the changing season in a meaningful way.
A Joint Effort with Delaware State Parks
This walk was a joint effort between Friends of Fort DuPont and Delaware State Parks. That partnership helped make the event both informative and welcoming. We are grateful for the support of Jake from Delaware State Parks, who helped make the morning a success.
Programs like this show the value of collaboration. They connect people to nature, encourage outdoor learning, and help highlight the natural assets of Fort DuPont and Delaware City.
Larry McLaren Brought the Landscape to Life
A special highlight of the morning was Larry McLaren from the Fort DuPont Redevelopment & Preservation Corporation. Larry led the walk and shared a steady stream of interesting facts and tidbits along the way.
He also brought an impressive depth of knowledge to the program. In fact, he seemed to know nearly every plant by both its common name and its Latin name. That added both humor and insight to the walk. Participants came away with a deeper appreciation for the native plants growing across the Fort DuPont campus.
Building Momentum for the Next Walk
This event was a strong start to the 2026 walking series, and we are excited to keep that momentum going. The next Fort DuPont Flora Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
That walk will feature a different focus, giving returning participants something new to experience. More information will be shared soon.
We thank everyone who joined us for this first walk of the year. We hope to see even more people at the next one as the 2026 series continues.
