📚 Delaware in Conversation Explores What It Means to Be a Delawarean

The second Delaware in Conversation program was a strong success for Friends of Fort DuPont.

Held in partnership with Delaware Humanities and the Delaware City Library, the talk welcomed 25 attendees for an engaging evening of ideas, history, and community reflection. The program asked a simple but powerful question: What does it mean to be a Delawarean?

Through a humanities lens, speaker Michele Anstine invited the group to explore Delaware identity through culture, memory, tradition, and shared experience. It was a thoughtful and fascinating talk, and the strong turnout showed just how much interest there is in this kind of programming in Delaware City.

A Humanities Conversation About Delaware Identity

This Delaware in Conversation event gave attendees the chance to think more deeply about what connects Delawareans across time and place.

Michele Anstine guided the audience through selected readings from important figures in Delaware’s history. Those readings helped frame the conversation and offered new ways to think about identity in the First State. The program also included the Delaware state song, which many attendees were surprised to learn is actually codified into Delaware law.

That detail added a fun and memorable moment to the evening. It also showed how history, law, culture, and tradition can all shape a shared sense of place.

The Second Talk in a New Series

This program was the second talk in the Delaware in Conversation series.

The series is a first for Friends of Fort DuPont, and we have been excited by the strong reception so far. Residents have responded with real enthusiasm, and that early momentum has been encouraging. It confirms that there is an audience for meaningful local programs that bring people together around Delaware history, culture, and civic life.

For Friends of Fort DuPont, that matters. This series helps us expand our reach in Delaware City and the broader New Castle County community while offering thoughtful public programming in an accessible local setting.

A Strong Partnership Behind the Series

The Delaware in Conversation series is presented by Friends of Fort DuPont with support from Delaware Humanities and in partnership with the Delaware City Library.

That collaboration has made it possible to offer a new kind of program for our community. It brings together local partners, strong speakers, and engaging topics in a welcoming space. It also reflects the Friends’ commitment to cultural enrichment, community connection, and public programming that adds value to Delaware City.

Looking Ahead to the Next Delaware in Conversation Program

We are excited to keep the series going.

The next Delaware in Conversation talk will take place on May 13, when Eric Mease will present “Delaware’s Signers and Slavery: It’s Complicated.” It promises to be another thoughtful program that examines Delaware history with depth and honesty.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this second talk. With 25 people in attendance and a very positive response from residents, this event helped build even more momentum for the series. We look forward to welcoming the community back for the next conversation.
