Fort DuPont Volunteer Day brought an incredible group of people together to help clean and organize the historic hospital and POW barracks building. Volunteers joined us from across New Castle County for a productive morning filled with hard work, teamwork, and a few fascinating discoveries along the way.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who donated their time and energy. Their efforts made a meaningful difference and demonstrated how much can be accomplished when a community comes together to care for an important historic place.
Fort DuPont Volunteer Day Supports Historic Preservation
The volunteers worked throughout the building, clearing rooms, moving materials, sweeping, sorting, and helping prepare the space for future preservation work.
Fort DuPont contains numerous buildings that reflect the site’s military and community history. Caring for these structures requires a long-term commitment, and volunteer projects provide important hands-on support for that work.
The progress made during Fort DuPont Volunteer Day will help Friends of Fort DuPont and its partners better understand, protect, and plan for the future of this historic building.
Volunteers from Across New Castle County
We were thrilled to welcome volunteers from communities throughout New Castle County. Some participants were already familiar with Fort DuPont, while others were experiencing the historic campus for the first time.
Regardless of where they came from, everyone arrived ready to pitch in. The group brought an enthusiastic spirit to the project and quickly transformed a challenging cleanout into a fun and rewarding community experience.
Volunteer Day was not simply about getting work done. It was also an opportunity to meet new people, learn more about Fort DuPont, and become directly involved in preserving a piece of Delaware history.
Discovering Pieces of Fort DuPont’s Past
One of the most enjoyable parts of working in a historic building is never knowing what might be found.
During the cleanout, volunteers uncovered items from the building’s more recent past, including an old jumpsuit and goggles. Discoveries like these sparked conversation, curiosity, and plenty of laughter while reminding us that historic buildings contain many different layers of stories.
History is not always found behind glass in a museum. Sometimes, it is discovered while cleaning a forgotten corner of an old room.
